Introduction
The atmospheric extinction project uses imagery from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) onboard NASA’s NOAA-20 satellite to examine how cloud cover affects the amount of city light the satellite receives from the earth’s surface. This study uses the daily at-sensor top-of-atmosphere nighttime radiance and clear sky confidence products in order to build the observatory’s understanding of how atmospheric factors like cloud cover affect the attenuation of light.
