Telescope Operator Training – Preliminary Knowledge
Four slide decks are also prepared that have been built to give a broad sense of topics related to basic optical ground-based observational astronomy. Participants are expected to engage with these materials in order and by either (A) signing-up for a series flipped-classroom style sessions, posted on the myUMBC UMBC Observatory Group or (B) by directly emailing and highlighting special circumstances (e.g., about to become an astronaut or start in a research group on campus).
- Preliminary Knowledge I – The Sky
- Preliminary Knowledge II – Optical Systems
- Preliminary Knowledge III – Digital Data
- Preliminary Knowledge IV – Dome Safety
Telescope Operator Training – Tutorials
Nine synchronous tutorials are also prepared that are specific to the UMBC Observatory Observing Program and the expectations of any Telescope Operator. It is expected that participants engage with each Tutorial in order, and only after demonstrating mastery of the “Telescope Operator Training – Preliminary Knowledge” materials. Participants evaluation is conducted by no less than two trained Telescope Operators, with approval from the Telescope Operations Team Coordinator.
